Last Man Standing season 8 premiere date confirmed at Fox, new promo
The Tim Allen sitcom is officially going to return with new episodes on Thursday, January 2, where it will be a part of an all-new programming block. There were some changes to Fox’s schedule that prompted it to make a move this year — think along the lines of the deal between the network and the WWE. Fridays are no longer available for programming and because of that, they had to carve out a spot elsewhere.

The more that we’ve looked at the programming this fall, the more this timeslot makes some sense. Remember that this is the spot that was once held by The Big Bang Theory, but it’s not on the air anymore and Young Sheldon is not anywhere near the same hit without it. There’s a lot of viewers there for the taking at this time, even if there is also Grey’s Anatomy to contend with over on ABC. We’ve long been curious to learn more about how Last Man Standing would fare if it was not in its Friday timeslot anymore, and we’re going to have an opportunity to see just that. It’s been one of the longest-tenured sitcoms on TV, and it’s somehow been able to do that while also preserving its underdog status.
As for what is coming in the new season, the latest promo didn’t give away too much other than that Tim Allen’s Mike Baxter may be looking at himself as a “new man” — though we’re not too sure we believe that. This may be a fun storyline for an episode or two, but we don’t foresee any huge, fundamental changes to a show that has worked so well for so many years. Most of the huge changes came last year, when Mandy was recast and the show also opted to age up Boyd and bring Jen on board.
Then again, this show does have a tendency to surprise here and there.
