Grey’s Anatomy season 16 spoilers: Who is Dr. Cormac Hayes?

Grey’s Anatomy season 16 is bringing in a new face in the form of Dr. Cormac Hayes — and it does raise some more questions on Karev’s future.

According to a new report from TVLine, Shameless actor Richard Flood is going to be appearing in a recurring capacity on the upcoming season as the aforementioned character. What we know about him is that he is taking on the position of head of Pediatric Surgery at Grey Sloan — a position that Justin Chambers’ character once held.

One of the things that we’ve come to know about this season is that with Alex over at Pac-North, it was only a matter of time before a new character was brought on board. In general, you could argue that there is a need for some new staff at the hospital since Richard Webber and now Owen Hunt are also both gone. Bailey’s going to have to make some important decisions soon if she wants to get the old gang back together … but she’s got a ton on her mind right now given the news that she is also now pregnant.

There is a fun, serendipitous sort of connection between Flood and Grey’s Anatomy already. Executive producer and showrunner Krista Vernoff previously worked on Shameless, even though her time there did not overlap with anything that Flood was doing. His arc as Fiona’s former love interest only lasted for the past couple of seasons.

We’ll have a chance to see over the next few weeks what this character brings to the table — just remember that this doesn’t guarantee anything when it comes to the long-term future of Karev. We’re still hopeful that he will find his way back to the hospital in due time.
