Is Lodge 49 renewed for a season 3, canceled at AMC?
Let’s start by sharing this small slice of news — regrettably, there is no Lodge 49 renewal at the moment. The even more regrettable news is that we consider it somewhat of a longshot to be coming back for more.
Do we think that AMC has faith in this series? Absolutely, given that otherwise, they never would’ve greenlit the show for a season 2 in the first place. It wasn’t a ratings dynamo following Better Call Saul last year, and this time around, it’s barely averaging a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 200,000 live viewers. There are more people watching after the fact, but they may not be enough to get Dud and his Long Beach crew another batch of episodes.
A big part of the problem with Lodge 49 may be that it’s the sort of show that most viewers won’t know what to do with. It’s neither a comedy nor a drama, and really exists somewhere in between. With that, it has a hard time finding a home for awards shows, and because it’s hard to explain plot-wise, it’s not the sort of show that can be sold easily. It takes watching in order to understand, and not everyone may be willing to do that.
Ultimately, Lodge 49 feels like that sort of show that will be discovered three or four years from now and people will love it then, but nobody’s going to remember to watch it now. The only chance that it has of sticking around is on the basis of its quality and ability to tell unique stories that you don’t see anywhere else. AMC may be patient, but if the ratings drop in a season 3 like they did for season 2, it’d be fair to officially cement this series as a major problem.
Odds are, AMC will decide one way or another on Lodge 49 season 3 over the coming weeks/months. They have to make a reasonably fast decision if they want to have the next batch of episodes air at some point in 2020.
