Call the Midwife season 9 filming officially wraps; what’s next?

Call the Midwife

Call the Midwife season 9 may not end up hitting the airwaves until the new year, but now the post-production crew can get to work on having the episodes ready!

In a new post on Twitter (which CarterMatt has for you to check out below), you can see a number of the cast members on the BBC series sharing that they are done filming the latest batch of episodes. These are ones that will technically begin with the Christmas Special (fittingly airing on Christmas Day), and will transition from there into the new episodes airing in early 2020 in the UK and then later this spring in the United States.

So what sort of stories will the new season tell? At its core, they will be about women facing off against tremendous pain and then also the difficulties of the times. With the constant amount of change coursing through the United Kingdom at that time, there’s no real way for new mothers to be prepared for it all. There may not even be a way for Nonnatus House to be prepared for it all, but you better believe that Trixie, Shelagh, and a number of other key characters are going to try their best.

In terms of their personal lives, of course we do want to see some forward movement for the midwifes! We’re looking forward to seeing Trixie find an increased amount of stability and even lasting love after everything that she’s gone through. Meanwhile, it would be nice for Valerie to recover from what she went through with her grandmother at the end of last season and find a little more peace. We don’t know if you can ever fully relax in this job … but it shouldn’t be what it was.

More so than individual stories or even character arcs, we’d argue that Call the Midwife is in so many ways a show all about how it makes you feel — it’s about pulling on those heart-strings and making you care about these people in every single way possible. It breaks your heart, but also allows you to feel something that is real and vulnerable and relatable. Tonally, it is almost This Is Us before This Is Us came on the air.
