The Blacklist season 7: What’s the role of the Townsend Directive?
Also, it’s something that has some origins that trace all the way back to the pilot. Speaking via TVInsider recently, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp tried to explain a little bit of information about the Directive in advance:
It’s information Red desperately does not want to give, which [explains] why he surrendered to the FBI, asking to see Elizabeth Keen.

So what is there to be excited about moving forward? Think along the lines of a new mystery, something that seems to be somewhat separate from just the relationship between Reddington and Liz — you know, some of the stuff that has defined a lot of the series so far. While it’s tied in some ways to why Reddington turned himself in, it goes beyond just her and goes more into the deepest recesses of his mind. Maybe this is a partnership that kept him safe for a while, but now, the times and the paradigm are different. Maybe now we’re at a point where nothing can keep him altogether safe anymore. If that is the case, it’s something we’re going to have to see play out in some form over the episodes to come … and we also think that there are some other pieces to the puzzle that could be constructed.
In the end, the primary questions worth wondering are as follows: What is this Directive, and is it related to anything going on with Reddington and Katarina? Given how recently it was introduced, plus its role within some of the preseason press for the show, it’s fair to assume that this will play an enormous role in everything that’s coming.
