For anyone out there thinking that Katarina Rostova would be a flash in a pan heading into The Blacklist season 7, here’s your proof otherwise. The writers have no interest in sending this character away in the near future. You can believe or not believe that this Katarina is really her, but it doesn’t matter — this character, played by Laila Robins, is essential. (Personally, we do think that this character is actually Katarina — it is the route of this story that makes the most sense.)

Speaking in a new interview via TV Guide, here is some of what executive producer John Eisendrath had to say on this particular subject:
She is going to be the main antagonist this year … And what’s exciting is that that, I think, makes good on the promise that’s sort of been baked into the series from the beginning, that at some point Liz would be part of a triangle between herself and Katarina and Reddington. It becomes the family drama that sort of has always been foreshadowed.”
There’s going to be some element of dark humor within this story — it’s hard not to when you think about Reddington’s history with almost everyone. Yet, there’s also so much drama and heartbreak. Katarina, at one point in her life, wanted to be there for Liz on some level. She’s just not the same woman she once was. There’s also the question of who Reddington is now in relation to Katarina — is he still Ilya Koslov, a man who once loved her? Or, is he now someone else? How much does Katarina know about this? There are many questions still to be answered one way or another, and we don’t have a super-specific timetable on all of this just yet.
As with all things The Blacklist, the best thing to do is to just stick around, enjoy the show, and then go along for the ride.
