Will Law & Order: SVU season 21 add a new detective?
On the surface, it feels almost inevitable that you would see another person entering that squad-room. After all, SVU has operated as of late with four characters tackling the policing part of the story and then one person bringing you the courtroom drama. Now, the balance is off with Carisi moving over to the DA’s office. That could be an exciting story, given that Sonny does know Benson and the rest of the SVU team so well … you would think that it would add a sort of synchronicity to the mix.
Yet, we know better than to just assume that we’re going to continue to see anything for certain there … just as we’d also be foolish to automatically assume that a new detective will be joining SVU immediately. Speaking in a recent interview with Us Weekly, executive producer Warren Leight seemed to suggest that one would be coming; however, it doesn’t seem as though there is a push for it to happen immediately:
“Welcome to the DA’s office, District Attorney Sonny Carisi … We’ll be looking out for some new blood in the squadron over time, and I think a lot of changes in the dynamic. It’s one thing when you work for lieutenant, now Captain Benson at the end of this episode. It’s another thing when you now go to the DA’s office and technically you are in charge of her in some ways.”
Eventually, it makes sense for another person to be added — it shakes up the show. Yet, from a producing standpoint, it also makes sense to feel out the situation and take time to figure out what is best. You don’t want to rush someone in unless you know for sure that they’re the right person for the job, especially when they are surrounded by such a well-oiled machine elsewhere.
In the end, we feel confident that we’ll see some new blood. We also just feel like patience is a virtue when it comes to get to see them.
