Dear White People renewed for season 4 at Netflix, will be final season

For everyone out there who wanted to see Dear White People have a chance to wrap up its run, we come presenting great news! Today, Netflix confirmed that there will be a final season of the college comedy, which will run for ten more episodes. Creator Justin Simien and executive producers Yvette Lee Bowser are going to return as the showrunners, and hopefully do everything that they can in order to ensure that the show comes to a proper landing.

One of the things that is clear leading into this renewal is that Dear White People wasn’t going to be a show that stuck around forever on the streaming service. While we bemoan sometimes series that get cut down well before their time, this is a little bit of a different case. Dear White People was never meant to be a series to last an extremely long period of time, mostly because sooner or later, most of the main characters were going to graduate and move on to other places. There is a finite nature to college, and it benefits a show like this to have a defined end so that it’s not stretched to the point where it doesn’t feel altogether realistic anymore. you also don’t want the cast to be aged up to the point where they are no longer realistic.

In a new statement, here is what Simien had to say about saying farewell to the project:

“I’m so grateful my little indie-that-could has made it to four seasons at Netflix … This show, along with the many talented storytellers it has brought into my orbit, has changed my life and I can’t wait to create a celebratory final volume befitting such a transformative experience.”

Do we want to see more satirical shows like this at Netflix in the future? Absolutely, especially since they offer up a window into a world that you don’t often see. In general, shows set around college are a little bit of a rarity because of their limited shelf life — also, it’s a little more of an ambiguous demographic for them sometimes since college students are often busy and don’t always take the time to watch a show about themselves.

Given how often Netflix is canceling series these days after super-short runs, it has to be considered a win the Dear White People lasted this long.
