Chicago PD season 7: The journey for Jay Halstead, Hailey Upton
At the moment, we know that there’s been a foundation set for Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton to have more of a long-term romance down the road. Yet, it’s also still very much in the formative stages. They aren’t together, and we’re just a few months removed from the big Ruzek/Upton storyline that encompassed a lot of the sixth season. It doesn’t feel like something that the producers are altogether eager to rush … though they could also surprise us. Remember, the Ruzek & Upton pairing came almost out of nowhere!
Speaking in a new interview with TVLine, executive producer Rick Eid is noting that there is at least some room to explore things with these two characters moving forward, though there is no guarantee that things are going to happen for the two of them immediately:
“There’s definitely a pretty powerful connection there … It’s just whether they choose to act on it, and when, and what that looks like. It’s definitely in play. They have a great partnership, a great friendship, and I think there’s definitely a mutual attraction and connection there. It’s just, I think, they both take their jobs very seriously. So that’s the elephant in the room.”
In the end, think about things this way — the two do care about one another. However, at the same time there are some other issues that they are going to be dealing with, including how difficult it can be for the two of them to date while also being in the force together. There then is also the romantic history that they’ve each gone through already, and some of the fear that if things don’t work out, they still will want to keep working together. Like any other prospective romance, there is a lot to think about here … but it may be fun to watch all of this be explored over time.
For now, don’t expect any huge leaps — a better analogy may be some small hops on the road to big things happening.
