This Is Us season 4 spoilers: Is Kevin in danger of relapsing?

Interested in seeing where things go from here on This Is Us season 4? We’re seeing Kevin Pearson make an enormous decision that feels selfless. Yet, in doing so, there is a big risk that he runs. It’s an enormous risk that could lead to a huge setback in his life.

Think about what he’s doing with Nicky at the moment — Kevin made the active choice to take off in order to be there for him after the arrest. That’s wonderful and noble; yet, there could be a downside of it that Kevin is not thinking through. In the process of him wanting to swoop in and be this hero — perhaps to overcompensate for a lot of his demons that he’s battled over the course of his past — there is an enormous cost.

Speaking via Entertainment Weekly in a new interview, executive producer Dan Fogelman describes some of what Kevin could be up against now that he has made the fateful choice that he has:

I think we call it admirable and reckless. Because if you think about that last season, seeing Nicky was what set him off and he fell off the wagon. So he’s really headed right back into the eye of the storm here with what triggers him.

If Kevin relapses, this could be a hard thing to recover from at this point. He will have done something that he regrets with just about every part of him and, with that in mind, he will have to brace for a long recovery. There will be addiction all around him, especially when you think in terms of Cassidy — in one way or another, we know that she is going to be involved in this story. You don’t bring Jennifer Morrison on board unless it’s for a big arc.
