Grand Hotel canceled at ABC; could season 2 happen elsewhere?
This news was confirmed via Deadline, and it comes after the first season generated at least some solid critical buzz. Grand Hotel had a premise that made it feel perfect for a fun summer TV show — it was soapy, funny at times, and stuffed full of drama and relationships. There were also a lot of interesting mysteries that were sprinkled in here, with one of the biggest ones being Sky’s disappearance.
So why cancel a show that had so much potential? A lot of it is because this is what ABC has a tendency to do with a lot of the summer shows — sending them out to pasture. We do recognize that the ratings for the first season weren’t great, as Grand Hotel brought in just a 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and a little over 2.7 million live viewers. Yet, they weren’t so terrible for a summer show that our jaw was on the ground in shock. It had some sort of a chance when you factored in the DVR ratings, but it still wasn’t enough.
As for why it wasn’t enough, think about the show’s lead-in courtesy of The Bachelorette/Bachelor in Paradise — ABC may have had higher expectations for Grand Hotel given what it was airing alongside a big show. Also, this was originally envisioned as an in-season show that got pushed back to summer, which may have meant that it was a little bit more expensive to keep around than some of their other fare. The fate is still out on Reef Break, but because of the production responsibilities of it (ABC isn’t footing the bill anywhere near as much), there’s still a small chance that it could get renewed even with smaller numbers. Nothing is altogether certain just yet, though we aren’t holding our breath.
We also wouldn’t hold our breath for a Grand Hotel season 2 elsewhere — ABC Studios was one of the production houses behind this show, so this network already had incentive to keep it.
