Supergirl character Maggie Sawyer wins Who Should Come Back? poll

Throughout the month of September, CarterMatt readers have been actively voting to answer one question: Who Should Come Back to their favorite shows? We started this polling series off with 24 characters from a wide array of shows, all of whom have been gone for at least a few months. We narrowed that field down to eight, and then a final four one week ago.

Now, we’re pleased to report that we have a winner … and that the results were not even close.

Throughout the whole of the tournament, it’s been an especially-dominant run for one Maggie Sawyer of Supergirl. The character, as played by Floriana Lima, has been a source of great praise and inspiration from the onset of her arrival. The relationship with Maggie and Alex (Chyler Leigh) proved to be meaningful and very relatable throughout their time on the show, and the joy of watching them is in part what made the goodbye so painful. This is a romance that meant a lot to a number of people out there, and even separate from Alex there were many Maggie stories to tell. Take, for example, her struggles as a young adult or her joining the police force in the first place. Had she remained on the show, there was so much more that could have unfolded.

So will we see Maggie come back at this point? There are questions aplenty surrounding that and no firm answers. Alex seems to be moving forward in her romantic life now and while Lima has expressed an openness in returning, nothing has ever materialized. With these two things in mind it’s hard to feel confident for a reprisal (a cameo or a two-episode arc could be possible), but we’d remember this in the end — no matter if Maggie comes back or not, it doesn’t diminish the power of this character, the Sanvers relationship, or the impact that it had on viewers. This is a storyline that will remain integral to the legacy of Supergirl even for years after the series concludes.

For those who hadn’t heard, Supergirl will premiere this Sunday on The CW with season 5.
