Grey’s Anatomy season 16: Ellen Pompeo talks series’ long-term future

For the time being, no one is saying one way or another … and that’s probably because no one knows for certain what the future is going to hold. Yet, Ellen Pompeo had a little bit of fun with the idea of an endgame, telling James Corden on a recent The Late Late Show episode that she’d love to get a lot of the original cast members back before the final send-off. The unfortunate issue in doing this is that there are a lot of these characters who are now dead, and that makes things a little problematic unless you want to either film new flashbacks and bring some of these people back in spectral form.
Pompeo, meanwhile, was a little more quiet on the subject of how she wanted the show to end, mostly because there are still a lot of secrets that need to be kept! The last thing that the producers want to do is have a situation where they think they have a wonderful idea, but can’t quite replicate it because it is something that was said by one of their stars in a television appearance. They’d go a different route at that point.
While we wouldn’t say that this is an interview stuffed with spoilers on a new season, it does give you a good sense of the long-term impact of some storylines on the show. Plus, it is a reminder that Grey’s Anatomy could very well end at some point, even if it’s not something that we see coming to pass for at least another year and a half. We’d personally love to see it make it to season 20, but the ball there is going to be in the court of Pompeo, ABC, and others.
