The Voice season 17 auditions: Katie Kadan wows with ‘Baby I Love You’

The Voice season 17

Just in case you need an extra reason to be stoked leading into The Voice season 17, Katie Kadan is here to deliver the goods!

In the video below, you can check out the Chicago musician (who says that she’s been doing it for eight years) come out with a rockin’ version of “Baby I Love You.” There is a great rasp to her voice, and an earthy style that makes you feel like she’s hanging on every note and bringing you all of her personality. She’s not trying to do anything other than be herself and she’s doing a really great job at that. She has the support of all of the coaches … and also most of their chair-turns.

What’s the one thing that is holding her back from the four-chair turn? It goes a little bit of something like this: The block. She wasn’t able to get the turn from Kelly Clarkson because of it, but it’s still clear that she’s going to have a LOT of options in terms of who she could go with. Of the eligible artists, we are curious to see Katie work with someone like John Legend. Both do have similar musical DNA — they play piano, and they can be known for that just as much as some of their vocals. John’s also from the midwest and with that, there is a certain degree of regional similarity here, as well.

Moving forward vocally, Katie will have to find some songs that surprise if she wants to cement herself as a favorite. She can probably get to the top six or so doing familiar covers, but we often think The Voice contestants need to show as much musical diversity as possible to win over new fans and have a sustainable career after the fact. This is something that a lot of contestants do struggle with after the fact.
