In a new post on Twitter, show executive producer Derek Haas made it clear that by the time the NBC series goes on winter hiatus, you’re going to either see Jesse Spencer or Taylor Kinney’s character working outside of Firehouse 51. What does this mean? Well, let’s just say that there are a lot of different possible meanings at play here! One of the most-obvious ones is the notion that one of them could be fired. Yet, there are some other readings here at the same time. Take, for example, the idea that one of them gets a promotion, a transform, or another job altogether. Working as a firefighter isn’t an easy job, and no characters know this better than Casey and Severide. They’re seen their colleagues die, just as they’ve also understood the physical and mental toll that it has taken on them.
Just remember this — just because one of them could be working out of 51 doesn’t mean that they are gone from the show. With this being Chicago Fire season 8, we could see Haas and the writers doing everything within their power in order to ensure that they continue to showcase different parts of the Chicago Fire Department. Maybe this season, that means getting to see either more firehouses or more of the department’s central leadership. There are other avenues out there that either character could explore leading into the new season. We just gotta see in the end what some of that could look like.
Remember that new episodes of Chicago Fire are going to kick off on NBC one week from Wednesday. There’s a lot to look forward to in the weeks to come!
