New Game of Thrones – House Targeryan prequel could get pilot order

Game of Thrones

We’ve noted for a while that there was one Game of Thrones spin-off in the works over at HBO … how about another now?

According to a new report coming in now courtesy of Deadline, the network is at the moment nearing a pilot order for a new drama, one that would be set around 300 years before the start of the main series. The idea would be to chart the “beginning of the end for House Targeryan,” which was of course the dominant house for some time in most of Westeros. The new series is executive produced by George R.R. Martin alongside Colony alum Ryan Condal, who wrote the original pilot. The show is adapted in part from Martin’s own Fire & Blood, and this was also attempted previously by Bryan Cogman, a Game of Thrones alum who is now a consultant on Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series.

It doesn’t take a whole lot in order to figure out why HBO would want to explore this territory, given how Daenerys stood for some time as one of the show’s most popular characters. Yet, would the appetite still be there for a show about her family history, or about the history of Westeros at all? Prequels are always a tricky proposition since there isn’t always that much mystery about them, and with the polarizing final season still recent TV history, that complicates things even further.

Personally, we prefer at present the already-put-together Jane Goldman pilot, mostly because it is set thousands of years before Game of Thrones and could revolve around some parts of the lore that could still contain surprises. Take, for example the origins of the White Walkers if the show ever opts to go in that particular direction.

Regardless of what project you are excited about, rest assured you won’t be seeing either for some time, if ever. The earliest we could imagine either series launching at this point is late 2020, but even that is probably too optimistic an estimate. 2021 is more realistic when you think about the amount of time needed to film and do post-production work on this sort of show.

What do you think about the idea of a Game of Thrones prequel about House Targeryan, or do you think that we even need more content from this world following the end of the series? Be sure to share in the comments, and stick around for some other news. (Photo: HBO.)
