American Horror Story: 1984 opening credits take you back in time

American Horror Story: 1984

Today, FX went ahead and debuted the official American Horror Story: 1984 opening credits … and they are as trippy as they come.

If you look below, you can see what we would best describe as a weird, wonderful look at how executive producer Ryan Murphy is interpreting the upcoming batch of episodes. It feels like a bizarre combination of infomercial and also slasher film; it’s colorful, it’s violent, and in the end, it’s going to get you excited for the news season (anyone else out there loving this season’s promotional campaign as much as we are?). It also just feels weird to see an opening-credit sequence for this show without an abundance of familiar names. There is no Sarah Paulson or Evan Peters included here for the first time — while Billie Lourd, Emma Roberts, Leslie Grossman, and John Carroll Lynch are names associated with this franchise, none of them have the same tenure as the two aforementioned stars. The same goes for Cody Fern.

The opening credits do tease some of the new faces to the franchise, including Olympian Gus Kenworthy, Glee star Matthew Morrison (who is reuniting with Murphy on the project), and then also Angelica Ross. This cast will be telling a story themed around a summer camp, one with creepy arrivals including a runaway from an insane asylum who may be looking for some sort of bloody revenge.

In the end, we’re excited for this upcoming season — if for no other reason than the simple fact that it feels different. After last season could’ve brought about the end of the known world, we’re kind of excited that we’re moving in a direction that feels a little more small-scale this time around. It’s more about an individual situation on the surface than something anywhere near as crazy as what we saw with Apocalypse … though we’re definitely well-aware that looks could be deceiving after thinking that Asylum was going to be just about the asylum (kind of like a Murder House feel) and we had some aliens and a dance sequence thrown in there for some reason. There may be something larger and more menacing hovering underneath the surface here that we don’t have a chance to either know or fully understand just yet.

American Horror Story: 1984 is set to premiere on FX come September 18 — it’s less than a week away! Brace yourselves for all sorts of creepy hijinks and all sorts of great stuff from start to finish.
