Queen Sugar renewed for season 5 one day after season 4 finale

The folks over at OWN don’t want to leave you hanging for too long — after all, Queen Sugar was just renewed for a season 5!

One day removed from the show’s epic season 4 finale, the drama series will be returning at some point (presumably in 2020) with new episodes. Queen Sugar is one of the network’s most-popular original series and it draws a faithful audience week in and week out. We mean that both in terms of the ratings (which were solid in comparison to season 3) and then also the social-media audience that is there week in and week out for it.

In a statement first confirming the big renewal news, here is what creator Ava DuVernay had to say:

“I’m thrilled to further explore the beauty, pain and triumph of this African-American family, with hopes that their story will continue to resonate with audiences who see themselves in the Bordelons … It’s a real honor to create this work with Warner Horizon and OWN as their support is rock-solid and wonderful.”

Meanwhile, OWN President Tina Perry added the following:

“Ava’s vision for Queen Sugar is one of inspired storytelling, and her execution of that vision has given us a remarkable series that makes us so proud. Her leadership and creative spirit — including the commitment to exclusively hire female directors and establish an inclusive crew — is unprecedented and evident throughout each episode of this beautiful series. We are grateful to Ava and her entire team of talented writers, producers, cast and crew and look forward to another season.”

We foresee Queen Sugar being one of those series that could last however long the creative team wants it to — provided the ratings stay where they are. We don’t think that with this world and with these characters, there’s going to be some sort of reason to slow things down and shut down the story anytime soon. This is a family drama, and while there are going to be problems within this family (check out Nova for a prime example of that), they’re all going to continue to be connected to each other. There are going to be all sorts of additional ups and downs and so much more story to tell.
