Is Queen Sugar renewed for season 5, canceled at OWN?
Let’s go ahead and kick this off with some of the bad news — for the time being, there is no official word one way or another on the future of the OWN drama. We’d love to see it stick around for some more coverage, but we’re also very much aware now that there are no guarantees of anything. Four years is a long time for a show to run in this current era, one where there are so many fewer mega-hits due to the number of options that are out there.
With that being said, we definitely feel like there are a number of additional stories that could be told from within the Queen Sugar world. As a matter of fact, we would argue that this is one of those shows that could run practically forever due to the precise focus of it and then also some of the characters who you’ve gotten an opportunity to meet along the way.
When you look at the ratings for season 4, the good news is that it is averaging a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, fairly close to what the show generated for season 3. The retention is there, especially when you consider how many people are probably watching after the fact. Beyond that, we think the fan interest is there and the same thing goes for the story potential.
Over the next several months, we imagine that the folks at OWN will huddle together and try to figure out what they want to do with the show. They’ll look at the live ratings and the DVR viewership in order to figure things out. We like to think that the executives would want to keep Queen Sugar around, mostly because the writers deserve it — and so do the fans. If the series does end in the next year or to, we hope that there’s going to be some sort of announcement in advance. Everyone has a chance to get some sort of proper closure.
As soon as we have more on Queen Sugar, we’ll have it for you here.
