The Blacklist season 7: What is the Townsend Directive?

As we approach The Blacklist season 7, rest assured that the series is going to connect back far into the show’s past. How far? Think all the way back to the pilot.

Why did Raymond Reddington want to turn himself into the FBI and demand for Elizabeth Keen in the first place? We’ve long theorized that this had a thing or two to do with his desire to try and connect with Elizabeth, to fill this emotional void that he never had resolved with anything else within his life.

Yet, there may be something more here, and that brings us over to the idea of the Townsend Directive. First teased at the end of season 6, this could be the thing that connects to Reddington’s initial decision with the FBI. Speaking in a new issue of TV Guide, executive producer Jon Bokenkamp notes that Katarina Rostova is going to be eager to get information regarding this directive … but it’s not something that we’ll see Reddington be all the interested in handing down. This may be why Katarina is interrogating him during the upcoming premiere.

The information in the Townsend Directive is going to be important, and if we had to theorize, it could involve information related to the future of the United States — and possibility the criminal underworld.

So how far are we going to see Katarina go in order to get these answers? She may be willing to try and infiltrate Liz Keen’s life. We could see her try to obscure her identity to get closer to Megan Boone’s character … but how will she be able to keep that secret? We would think that if we were Reddington, we’d tell Liz (if he was able to) that Katarina is out there and closing in on her. Then again, Reddington does have this knack for being able to zig when other people think that he is going to zag.

The Blacklist season 7 premiere is going to be coming up on Friday, October 4 and we will be here with you every step of the way!

How do you think the Townsend Directive will shape The Blacklist season 7?
