Victoria season 4 star Jenna Coleman signs on to different BBC project
According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, Jenna Coleman is re-teaming with the Victoria production company of Mammoth Screen for The Serpent, an upcoming BBC/Netflix series that probably won’t be on the air in some time. Filming is underway in Thailand on this eight-episode series, which is based on a true story.
Tahar Rahim is the star of the show, playing one of the most elusive criminals of the entire 20th century in Charles Sobrhaj. What we know about him is that he was the chief suspect in the unsolved murders of many young Western travelers. (Think up to 20!) These were people who traveled in 1975 and 1976 across Nepal, Thailand, and also India. He was able to do everything that he could in order to ensure that nobody could find him — he was exceptional in hiding out and making sure that authorities couldn’t get to him … even if all signs were pointing to him. At one point, he was Interpol’s most-wanted man, someone who had multiple arrest warrants out there for him in different countries. Sobrhaj is technically still alive, but with the way in which his story goes, you could probably tell a story about him that is longer than just eight episodes.
For those curious, Coleman will play Marie-Andrée Leclerc, described as “Sobhraj’s partner and frequent accomplice.” Suffice it to say, this is a very different sort of role for Jenna. This is a woman who, in between Doctor Who and Victoria, is known for a wide array of positive roles. Victoria may have been a flawed human, but we don’t think that anyone out there would proclaim that she was some sort of force for darkness. This is difference.
