It wasn’t too long ago that much of the Saturday Night Live world was taken by surprise by the news that Leslie Jones would be departing. She was an integral part of the series, she had several iconic characters, and she was also someone who seemed to be especially friendly to a lot of incoming hosts. The series is going to miss her.
Yet, with her departure comes a chance to see a number of other interesting new faces at the same time — or at least potentially one. There wasn’t a huge influx of departures following this past season, and most of the cast is going to feel largely the same. Yet, SNL could opt to find another performer to fill the void left by Jones — they wouldn’t “replace” her per se, but simply bring a different energy to the proceedings.

So when could this new cast member be announced, if there is one? There may not be any real reason for the folks at the sketch show to hurry anything along. Last year, it was late September when Ego Nwodim was officially added as a featured player. SNL has the luxury of taking their time to find the right people, largely because their production schedule works in such a way that they only work on a given episode for a short period of time.
While it may be true that SNL has a pretty enormous cast as it is and they don’t necessarily need anyone else, at the same time we always like them to continue to tweak things here and there behind the scenes. What that does in the end is allow the show a chance to continue to rotate in and out new people and find more potential stars. Because most of the cast members are relative unknowns when they join, you never know when you’re going to find the next great person!
