We know that Animal Kingdom season 5 is coming onto TNT in the new year, and we also know that there are mysteries aplenty with it.
Take, for example, the future of one Emily Deschanel as Angela. When she was first cast prior to the start of season 4, the idea was that she was going to have a “season-long arc” in her role. Our feeling at the time was that this could be a character who was similar in some ways to what we saw previously from Denis Leary as Billy, someone who would come in, wreck havoc, and then eventually say “peace out” on her way out the door. Maybe she would die, or maybe she would decide that she doesn’t want to be a part of the Cody gang and all of their chaos anymore.

Yet, in the end, the decision that the writers for Animal Kingdom made was something a little bit different: They decided to keep her around for the entire season. Not only that, the door is open for her to be a big part of the show moving forward! She immersed herself more into the family at the end of the season, as the group ended up protecting her in the final scene.
With Smurf gone, is there a chance that Angela sticks around? She’s not going to replace Ellen Barkin’s character, but you could argue that she could play a role in the operation. She has a criminal background, emotional ties to a number of the Codys in some shape or form, and we know that she can be smart and sly. There is more story to tell there, but also still questions like the following — can she really be trusted? Is it possible that she will screw everyone over?
Regardless of whether or not Emily will be promoted to series regular, this much seems to be clear: The door is wide open for her to return. One way or another, we’re sure that we will see this character back.
