If you look below, you can take a look at our quick thoughts on all of the performers, coupled with who we saw Charlie pick at the tail end of the episode.
Sam DeRosa, “Pill for This” – Sam is someone who does already know Sam — they spent time together in school! It actually started at an upbeat pop song, but it then transitioned over after the fact to somewhat of a ballad. It was a choice that was made to turn this into a powerful song, something that could compete with the other stuff in the room. They had to get creative, mostly because it was going to be a challenge to be able to out-pop some of what the other singers and coaches were doing.
Zach Sorgen, “Bad Habit” – With the work of Ryan Tedder, Zach worked to make the song a little bit edgier. One of the goals was for Charlie to get something that he hasn’t done before. The chorus had a really lovely chorus — it was smooth, savvy, and it actually built up into something that was even more slick as it went along.
Joel Adams, “Hate Love” – This was an interesting collaboration in that Joel didn’t seem at first to be super-into the idea of turning this into a dance number. He maybe offered more resistance to the idea than 90% of the other songwriters who come in. Yet, he recognized that he was working with Ester Dean, one of the best in the business. It’s great he listened, given that the way that they flipped the word “hate” in this song was so smart.
Who did Charlie choose?
He really was emotional about this in the end! We didn’t have a good sense of where he was going to go here, since these were all three very different songs. In the end, he chose “Bad Habit”!
