The Handmaid’s Tale ‘sequel’ The Testaments could happen at Hulu

The Handmaid's Tale season 3

In what shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, the folks over at Hulu want a little bit more of the world of The Handmaid’s Tale.

According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, Hulu and MGM Television are already in development for The Testaments, a sequel based on the upcoming Margaret Atwood source material. This is a chance to continue the world of The Handmaid’s Tale in some new fashion, as the new series is set fifteen years after some of the events in the original novel.

As for how all of this will work within the world of The Handmaid’s Tale itself, that remains to be seen. Remember here that the show has already gone past the life of the original novel and there is no end date set at the moment. Will The Testaments as a series air following the original show, or will the two eventually air alongside each other. As you can tell, there are a lot of things to still be hammered out.

Let’s get, at least for now, to sharing some statements. Here is what Steve Stark, President of Television Production at MGM, had to say:

Margaret Atwood is a literary icon who continues to delight and challenge readers through her provocative and compelling prose … She has been an incredible creative partner and resource to MGM throughout the production of Handmaid’s and we look forward to working with her on the story’s exciting next chapter.”

Meanwhile, Craig Erwich, Senior Vice President of Originals, Hulu, added the following:

“Margaret Atwood is one of the visionary storytellers of her generation. From her award-winning poetry, short-stories and novels, Margaret has continually pushed boundaries and broken barriers to bring innovative stories to life.”

For now, we know that there is at least one more season of The Handmaid’s Tale proper to look forward to, but it makes sense for Hulu to go ahead and snatch up the rights to this new show, as well. After all, The Testaments would’ve been in contention elsewhere unless Hulu made a move … you would at least have to think that this is the case.
