The first thing that’s kinda cool/quirky about Sam is that it seems like she already knows Charlie, and the two apparently had class together many years back! It’s a totally random connection, but when the dust settles, we don’t think that this is going to help her get a collaboration off the ground. The music business is just that — a business. Charlie’s going to pick the song that he thinks is best at the end of the episode, but there’s a lot of good stuff that Sam is bringing to the table here.
What works about this track? It’s got a good beat backing it up, a smooth vibe, and it sounds like something that would be on pop radio in 2019. It also has a little bit of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in the lyrics, since it talks about this idea of a way to cure oneself of heartbreak — though there is no clear way to do that. There is no instant pill that makes you feel better after feeling heartbroken. The song is a way to attach a specific action to a universal feeling, and there are so many songs out there about heartbreak. Yet, it still feels different.
Based on what the producers are saying to Sam, we don’t think that there are going to be any seismic changes to the song after the fact. It feels like they want to keep some of the basic feel of the track in place, and maybe just hone down the energy and the style to extract the most emotion out of it possible.
