The Affair season 5 episode 2 video: Who is comforting Helen?

Entering The Affair season 5 episode 2, it goes without saying that Helen is in a broken place emotionally — she’s fallen into a cavernous hole, and it’s not altogether clear to her if she is going to be able to find her way out of it.

Here is what we do know entering this upcoming episode — we are prime to see one emotional conversation after the next. Helen’s grieving after losing Vik, and it’s not something that a day, a week, or even a year could cure. He represented a very different sort of man and relationship from what she had with Noah, and while she knew that he had cancer, that did not mean that she was prepared in the slightest for what was coming up after the fact. She wasn’t ready to deal with any of the emotional aftermath, the suffering or the feeling that he wasn’t going to come back. That’s why there is a certain amount of denial in Helen’s voice. We don’t think that she is being delusional, but she is just trying to convince herself of an alternate reality even though it may not be one that properly exists.

So who is trying to comfort here in this preview? Think along the lines of Sasha Mann, the notorious actor who is appearing in the movie based on Noah’s life. He wants to do his best to be there for her in her time of need, and there are a number of different questions that we’ve got as a result of that. Take, for example, whether or not Sasha is trying to just be Noah rather than himself. He’s clearly someone who gets into some of this roles and in the premiere, he made it clear that he couldn’t wrap his head around the total downfall of Noah’s marriage. He could be there for Helen … but there could also be a cost. She may not be ready for someone else, and beyond that, it’s also hard to gauge his intentions.
