Songland sneak peek: Rafferty sings ‘Heart Full of Love’ for Leona Lewis

Songland

What lies ahead on Tuesday’s Songland is an episode fronted by Leona Lewis, and the latest sneak peek (via Rafferty) has us very much excited.

If you look below, you can see the songwriter deliver an emotional performance of his song “Heart Full of Love” in front of the former X Factor superstar and some of the producers. Through most of Songland to date, we haven’t heard too many emotional ballads. There have been slower songs (“Crowded Places” during the Jonas Brothers episode), but none of them sound completely in this genre. This song feels like a perfect entry for Lewis — it could suit her voice and if not her, someone like Calum Scott could also do some wonders with it.

One more thing that we should say here is that Rafferty may have one of the best voices that we’ve had a chance to hear so far on Songland. He has a lot of range, a lot of power, and it’s clear just from listening to him here that he means every single word of these lyrics.

So what’s the challenge for an episode featuring Leona Lewis? A lot of it stems from the fact that her performances are just as vulnerable and emotional as anything Rafferty does here, and she needs to be able to relate to it on the level that he does. That’s where a lot of work is going to come in after the fact. Hopefully, he gets a chance to take this to one of the producers and hone it down to make it even more specific and appropriate so that Leona will want this song.

Is it possible that Leona will want all of the songs? We’re not ruling that out, given that we’ve already written about how this episode could have the biggest twist of the whole season wedged in there somewhere. It doesn’t feel manufactured, either — it feels mostly just about whatever it is that Leona wants to do.

What do you think about this Rafferty song?
