Power season 6: Series boss explains major premiere death

Power

The Power season 6 premiere on Sunday made a number of big moves, but none was bigger than killing off a major cast member. Angela Valdes is gone. While we knew going into the premiere that such a move was possible, it’s one of those things where seeing is believing. You don’t want to think that it’s going to happen until it stares you right in the face. We didn’t even want to believe it then, and we’d be lying if we didn’t say that there was a part of our soul that 100% convinced that she wasn’t gone. Yes, we did see her body on the medical examiner’s table and everyone’s confirming that she’s dead — there’s just that part of us as a viewer always reaching for that tinfoil hat since so many shows these days like to do the whole “just kidding, they aren’t dead” trick.

While there could have been stories told where Angela almost died and still lived, there’s even more that comes from her being gone. That person from Ghost’s life is gone and now, he’s more isolated than ever before. That makes him dangerous and desperate in a way that he hasn’t been before.

In speaking on the decision to kill Angela off, show executive producer Courtney A. Kemp said the following to TV Guide:

“It’s indicative of how every character on our show is given a choice … They always buy their own death. With Kanan, he bought his death; Tommy says early in [last season] season, ‘Stay away from Tariq.’ Tommy warned him and what happens? The same is true with Angela. In Episode 510, Paz says to her, ‘Come home with me. Don’t do this.’ Angela can’t stay away from him. She loves him. And love is stupid.”

So while the death of Angela Valdes is going to be tough to accept, we know already that this is far from the last one we’re going to see on the series. This is a show where almost everyone could go and to use Kemp’s own words, it’s not hard to see scenarios where Ghost could end up “buying his own death.” Just remember that he’s probably going to fight for revenge on Tommy (who is trying to pull a gambit of his own) and in doing that, he could lose himself even more. It’s not going to bring Angela back.

Are you shocked that Power actually went there with Angela?
