Is Last Week Tonight new tonight on HBO? What’s coming up
Unfortunately, the simple truth here is that we’re not going to see the series on the air tonight … or even next week, for that matter. Per a tweet from the show’s official account, we are going to be seeing Last Week Tonight on the air again come September 8. That’s a long break of two week, especially after the show took a long wait for most of the month of July. Why do this? The simple answer is to try to air more new episodes and save them for the fall.
So what sort of content will be out there this fall for Last Week Tonight to discuss? Presidential debates could be a part of it, and that is something that will gear up more and more throughout the next several weeks. We’re excited to see a lot of this play out, even though we’re bummed about the break right now. (If you didn’t know, production-wise these breaks are needed to help the writing/researching staff — these shows are meticulously put together, and they’re a little bit different from what you see over on your typical late-night institution.)
Ratings-wise, HBO may also be at the moment interested in trying to save as many of its new episodes as it can for airing this fall following some of the other shows they’ve got coming. Ballers and The Righteous Gemstones may have an audience, but are the ratings for either one of those shows going to be anywhere close to some of the numbers that we see for a Watchmen? That feels a little bit more like the heavy hitter at the network.
Rest assured that whenever Last Week Tonight does come back on the air, we’ll be around to cover it in full. Think in terms of more feature pieces and discussions about the overall comedy and its pop-culture relevance.
