The Affair season 5: Anna Paquin on Joanie’s state of mind
Ever since that character’s death at the end of season 4, there have been questions aplenty about what actually happened — was she murdered by Ben? Will anyone know the full truth? Speaking via TVInsider, Paquin herself noted that viewers would get some of the answers they want. Beyond that, she also expressed where Joanie is mentally when the series picks up:
Everything the audience knows about her life is not necessarily the version of events as she understands it. Obviously, she’s grown up without a mother, which has had a profound effect. She and everyone else is very confused about how her mother died. The audience knows more sometimes than the character does.

Joanie will be in the dark, and she has multiple reasons for being in Montauk when the show comes back. She’s someone who is looking at the effects climate change have had on the local environment, but she’s also someone who will be drawn to a search for the truth. She’s the same age that Allison was when she died, and she’s not a particularly happy character. She’s constantly mired in tragedy and feels like she has an impossible task trying to extract all of the demons from her head.
Rest assured, The Affair season 5 will also still focus on at least a couple of the original core characters in Noah and also Helen. They will move forward — though not necessarily with each other. Read more all about that by heading over to the link here.
