How Grey’s Anatomy season 16, Station 19 season 3 will blend

Grey's Anatomy season 15 episode 6

We’ve heard already that Grey’s Anatomy season 16 and Station 19 season 3 are going to be more blended than ever moving forward. The talk about crossovers every week turned out to be false; yet, there are going to be opportunities to see both of these shows still within the same universe in one way or another.

So how is all of this going to work … especially when Station 19 doesn’t premiere until the new year and has its own important storylines to address? Let’s just say that it’s going to take a lot of clever work on the part of the writers’ rooms in order to make it happen. Speaking via TVLine, executive producer Krista Vernoff indicated that they will be using Grey’s Anatomy to give you a sense of the timeline, while also not forcing Station 19 viewers to watch it in order to understand what’s going on:

“We are using Grey’s to mark time on both shows … When Station 19 premieres [at midseason], we’ll do a little bit of flashing back to cover the time lapse.

“The challenge that was presented to me was this: How do you create a more unified universe and a little bit more in the way of crossovers but also allow for the fact that these shows don’t air back-to-back in many other countries? You can’t write it as a two-hour movie. They need to be completely satisfying if you’re only watching one show, and exciting and illuminating if you are watching both. And so far, I feel really good about what we’re doing.

“If you only watch one show, you’re satisfied … And if you watch both shows, you get some information or some cool pieces that you wouldn’t have if you didn’t watch both shows.”

Our feeling is that some of the stories from Station 19 will likely be either mentioned or addressed on Grey’s Anatomy since it’s almost impossible for that to not happen judging from the shared nature of the world. Yet, to get context and a greater understanding, you will need the spin-off show in the new year. The end result of this could be a more exciting shared universe … but one that doesn’t come at the expense of either show. As long as the writers are aware that not all Grey’s Anatomy viewers watch Station 19 and vice-versa, everything should work out okay.
