Yellowstone season 2 episode 9: What happened to Tate?
Entering this episode, it was clear that something could happen to John Dutton’s grandson Tate, the one person who Kevin Costner’s character cares about more than anything. There’s an innocence to the boy that he wants to protect, and there’s also an opportunity here for him to perhaps right some of his previous wrongs and give him a life that he didn’t give to Beth, Jamie, or Kayce. He got him a horse, and also taught him to responsibly care for it.
Yet, at the end of the episode tonight, John let his guard down. He was in a position where he assumed that there were ranch-hands all around, not aware of what they’d been up to with Jimmy, and he sent Tate out to go feed his horse. At some point while he was outside, the boy was captured. This is heartbreaking, to put it mildly, and it sets the tone for some of the stuff that we could see as this show continues to progress a little bit further on into the finale.
For now, though, we’ll say this: We have a hard time thinking that Tate is dead. If Malcolm Beck kidnapped him, which we think is the obvious theory, then he needs Tate to be alive in order for him to get the optimal value out of some sort of ransom negotiation. This is just going to be the thing that throws John, Kayce, Monica, and others into total fury — and for Monica, this was a devastating episode in general given the racism that she was subject to at the boutique a little earlier on in the hour. We’re at a point now where there is anger permeating through the ranch and the showdown coming could be violent beyond words.
To think, the end of this episode was so dramatic that it almost made us forget about what’s going on with Jamie being a prospective father and potentially having to side against his family again.
