There were a number of surprising and controversial people within the Dancing with the Starsseason 28 cast this morning. When it comes to pro dancers, though, there was an especially big shock. Sharna Burgess isn’t a part of the show for the upcoming season, which is an enormous surprise given that she is the reigning champion.
Do we recognize that Sharna and Bobby Bones winning last season was a polarizing decision? Sure, but they did work hard and do everything that they could in order to provide entertaining routines for the show. We still think that Sharna deserved an opportunity to come back and defend her title, just like so many other pros have done over the years.

At present, there’s no clear evidence as to why Sharna isn’t coming back to the show — just that she isn’t coming back for now. She confirmed that in a post on Instagram; it doesn’t appear to have been her choice, and the producers of Dancing with the Stars do occasionally have seasons were certain pros get snubbed. Sometimes it’s due to what they feel are the best natural pairings with celebrities; other times, there have been contractual or scheduling reasons behind it. This time, it feels more like the producers just went in a different direction.
It’s disappointing to not have Sharna back for another run of episodes, but remember this — Sharna being snubbed now doesn’t mean that it will be for good. She could be back before too much longer!
