Songland sneak peek: Katelyn Tarver performs ‘Young’ for Old Dominion
Out of all of the songwriters who have appeared on Songland since the start of the series, Katelyn has a considerable amount of name recognition. She’s best known for being Jo on Big Time Rush, but she has also appeared on The Secret Life of the American Teenager and also multiple episodes of HBO’s Ballers. Yet, here she is presenting her skills as a songwriter with a track called “Young” for Old Dominion.
The challenge within Wednesday’s episode is a little bit different from what you’ve seen for the rest of the season — this isn’t just about finding a song that the band could record that would make sense for them. It’s also about getting one that will work for a national Jeep commercial — that’s the end goal of this. Given how often car commercials in general air, this is the sort of platform where a song could be exposed to millions of people — from there, maybe those people look up the song after the fact and become fans. Because of this, the song has to appeal to what the brand is to go along with what Old Dominion wants to record. Think along the lines of something adventurous and imaginative.

Old Dominion does seem to be receptive to what Katelyn is bringing to the table here, though they do comment that in its current form, the track feels a little too “feminine” in its imagery and style. That’s not a permanent issue, though, as some studio time with the producers could easily change that. You can hear in the lyrics and the style of the track that there is a natural energy in here that should work quite well with what Jeep wants, and you have to consider that first and foremost a great way for Katelyn to get her foot in the door.
We’ll see what other songs are presented when this episode of Songland airs on NBC tomorrow night.
