Is The Rook renewed for season 2, canceled over at Starz?
Alas, there is no definite answer as of yet when it comes to the series’ future fate. Starz has yet to announce anything for sure in regards to the show just yet, but there is still a chance that it could come back. It’s a decision that the network may wait a few weeks in order to determine, based on what some of the cumulative ratings are that they get a chance to look at.
A show like The Rook is an incredibly difficult one to gauge, mostly because the live ratings on Starz tell such a small picture of the overall numbers. The network releases episodes at midnight and there are an increasingly large number of people who may opt to watch an installment in advance of it airing. What would the point be of waiting if they don’t have to wait? That’s one of the ways that we look at it.
When looking at the live ratings alone, though, they’re not altogether impressive — The Rook is drawing just 230,000 live viewers on average. If you compare that to some of Starz’s other shows, that’s less than half the live audience for The Spanish Princess and less than a quarter of the audience of its highest-rated shows Outlander and Power. It needs to be generating some great streaming viewership to have a chance of continuing onward.
Do we think that there’s potential for a show like this to last for many years? Sure. While there are dozens of shows out there about characters with powers, we don’t think that many of them have the same style or tone as The Rook — and that’s without its strong mystery component. We think that a season 2 could expand the world or even bring it in different directions. Think about some of the other characters who could be introduced; this show has already set the standard for weirdness high with Gestalt, a collective that is always going to rise to the top of the fact insofar as uniqueness goes.
