Elementary season 8: Why isn’t it happening over on CBS?
Following tonight’s finale, is there a chance at there being an Elementary season 8 over on CBS? In this article, we’re going to do our best to look at this situation and the show’s future chances.
Let’s start off, though, by getting some of the bad news out of the way — there isn’t going to be another season at present. CBS confirmed a long time ago that season 7 was going to be the final one and through that, the writers could plan for the series finale with that in mind. It gave them a chance to tell every story that they wanted to.
As for why the show is concluding, there are a number of different answers for that. For starters, Elementary has not been a high-rated show on CBS for some time now. The final season has generated a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then over 3 million live viewers a week. Maybe these ratings would be enough for a summer TV show in its first season, but not in season 7. Shows get progressively more expensive as they go along, and add to this the fact that Elementary has two big names in Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. It also films in New York City, hardly an inexpensive place to film. Even though Elementary does have a sizable overseas audience and a lot of replay value due to its procedural nature, we may be at the point where the show isn’t as financially viable.
Beyond that, it’s also possible that everyone involved was ready to do some other things. We’re lucky to even get a season 7 in the first place, given that season 6 was planned at first to be the final season and ended in a way that would have allowed Sherlock and Joan to live out a future in London.
Could an Elementary season 8 happen someday?
While there are no plans, we don’t think in this era you can ever rule anything out. Because Holmes and Watson are such timeless characters, there’s always going to be an appetite for more of the two of them together. It’s just something to think about within the years to come.
