The InBetween finale: Did Cassie vanquish Ed Roven for good?
For most of the finale, Cassie did her best in order to come to grips with Ed, the same adversary who has been haunting her for the bulk of the season. There was something therapeutic in the way that this story was resolved — namely, think about being able to exorcise some of the demons from the past and allow Cassie to get a little bit of closure.
What we learned about Ed, in the end, was that he was a coward. He spent so many years within the InBetween because he didn’t want to go to the true “other side” — the place where he really belongs. What was especially good about how Cassie made this happen was how she was able to utilize some of Ed Roven’s past victims in order to do it. After spending most of the season working to understand the InBetween further, what we saw at the end of the episode was her being able to use her connections in order to conjure up some of these people to send her right back to Hell … or the show’s version of her.
What The InBetween reminded us of in its closing moments is just how creepy, and also how entertaining, it can be. The dead were the ones who dealt with the dead in the end, and it happened in order to ensure that the living could find a greater sense of peace — with Cassie to go along with it. Ed is gone, and if the show does return, we have to imagine that there will be some other people haunting Cassie then.
Take, for example, who we saw in the bed at the end of the episode — someone who seems ready and willing to remind Cassie of her mother, and someone who already seems terrifying in his own right. Did he kill her mother? (For the record, it was Cassie’s own mother Claire who was able to help make sure she was okay in the end. She’s still looking for her, and may do so if we get more.)
