Grey’s Anatomy season 16 spoilers: Will hospital survive short-handed?
Yet, for the sake of this article, let’s discuss the career status of Richard Webber, Meredith, and also Alex. The trio were fired by Bailey near the end of last season over their roles within the insurance-fraud scandal that could land Meredith behind bars, and it’s such an interesting spot for the hospital to be in. For starters, they are extremely short-handed. Beyond that, Bailey had to fire some of her friends and colleagues. That is a situation that James Pickens Jr. expounded upon in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight:
“It made perfect sense … If someone was going to fire me, [it had to be] Bailey, who I mentored. But it sets up for some really fascinating and really funny and timely storytelling moving forward. I’m excited to see where it takes us all.”

Rest assured, we are just as excited to see where the story goes and what sort of twists and turns are going to be coming up, given that the writers can’t possibly keep Richard, Meredith, and Alex gone forever! The three would leave the hospital understaffed when it comes to doctors in key positions, and then you’d have a serious patient-care problem. We think that Bailey will be able to move quickly on some of the insurance-fraud issues and get at least a couple of the doctors back before the end of the first couple of episodes. Otherwise, the hospital runs the risk of diving into a hole that’s too deep for them to be able to get out of it.
