Arrow season 8: Show EP on series finale plans, flexibility

If there’s one thing we can say about the legacy of Arrow season 8 for certain as of right now, it’s this — flexibility is a principal component. The writers have always been receptive to go along with some of what they like behind the scenes, and also some of what fans enjoy when episodes air. Remember for a moment here that Felicity Smoak was intended at first to be a character who you only saw for a short period of time; now, she’s fundamental to this world and one of the Arrowverse’s most influential characters. In many interviews now, we’ve heard about the challenges that are going to come with now having her as a big part of the ensemble.

So where is the series going to go moving forward? Well, there may have been some flexibility when it comes to plotting out the endgame. Speaking via TVLine, executive producer Marc Guggenheim notes that the ending that’s been conjured up for the show is not quite the same as the one that was planned in advance:

“The thing that I’ve sort of always told myself about the finale was that I wouldn’t be so rigid about my plan that I wouldn’t leave myself open to other ideas, … Had I not left myself open, I wouldn’t have written the [last] scene I wrote, which I really, really like.”

Is that exciting? If nothing else, it’s a fascinating evolution of the show and a reminder that nothing within this world is set in stone. It’s also an ending that is going to have to come about rather quickly. Think in terms of this — there are only a couple more episodes of Arrow on the other side of Crisis On Infinite Earths. That means that there won’t be a lot of time to wrap up the story. The writing is going to have to move quickly in order to get to whatever idea Guggenheim has cooked up.
