Better Call Saul season 5: Bob Odenkirk on plans for Gene
Speaking in a new interview with TheWrap, Odenkirk (who has a good chance of capturing an Emmy for playing Jimmy McGill) said that following on a possible direction for Gene, who has spent most of the series’ run in various montages or low-key sequences: “I think they intend to take that character somewhere and land it.”
As for where that landing takes Gene, even Odenkirk doesn’t even know. He’s not aware of the final plan for the character, who he believes will manifest eventually as a combination of both Jimmy, Saul, and who he is at this point in his life. We know that he works a menial job at Cinnabon, but he’s also someone who spent the bulk of his adult life chasing something — whether it be success, approval, or money. He doesn’t have any of these as Gene and that is slowly going to drive him up a wall. He may know that there are serious consequences to revealing his true self, but we could eventually come to a point in those flash-forwards where Gene doesn’t care anymore.
Beyond Gene slowly starting to lose it over his current lot in life, there are some other questions worth asking with the flash-forwards. Take, for example, whether or not there is going to be an opportunity to see Kim Wexler or some other character from the current timeline reappear. She remains the biggest enigma in this series, given that she is unaccounted for in Breaking Bad — we like to think that redemption is possible for Jimmy as Gene. Getting forgiveness from her could be a key component to it, even if she and Gene don’t have any romantic future at all in the future.
Better Call Saul season 5 is going to be premiering in 2020 over on AMC. Once we get closer we’ll have more news.
