Is Agents of SHIELD new tonight on ABC? With the way in which season 6 changed during its run and how it ended, it would be nice to have a seamless transition into season 7. Think in terms of a brief hiatus, and a chance to see the LMD version of Coulson in action sooner rather than later.

Alas, here is the less-than-stellar news — there is no Agents of SHIELD on the air tonight, and nor will there be one for the remainder of the year. It was announced some time ago that the final season of the Marvel drama will premiere in 2020, even though filming for it recently wrapped up.

So what’s the wait? For ABC, a lot of it has to do solely with their desire to program different shows on the fall schedule, ones that they feel have a better chance of blowing up and becoming enormous ratings success stories. We do understand the logic behind the move, even if there is a part of us that wishes that we didn’t have to wait so long to see how this story ends … especially given what we’re expecting to see!

At the top of the season 7 priority list has to be a lot of time travel, given that this seems to be the primary construct for the narrative at the moment. We get to see life before SHIELD and presumably its early days, but what about some eras in between? Explore some parts of the MCU we haven’t had a chance to see and we’ll be happy.

Meanwhile, exploring the concept of Coulson as an LMD should prove interesting, mostly in seeing how some of these characters respond to the idea of him being either a friend or a foe. After the Aida disaster, can he be trusted? How will May respond to being around someone who both looks and acts like the greatest love of her life?

Finally, we think the most important thing for Agents of SHIELD season 7 is that there is an epic adversary at the center of it all, someone who makes character cower in fear with their very presence. This really feels essential to ensuring that the story ends with the biggest explosion of stakes possible.

More than likely, season 7 will be premiering next summer.
