Euphoria season 2: Series boss on those ‘is Rue dead?’ theories

Euphoria season 1 Rue

As we embark on a long wait for Euphoria season 2, we know that there’s been a question in the minds of many this week: Is Rue dead? Is everything from hear on out some sort of depiction of afterlife or a fever-dream of someone else?

The musical number, coupled with Rue relapsing at the end of season 1, made a number of different theories possible. A lot of these are interesting to think about, but that doesn’t mean that any of them are true.

With that in mind, let’s go ahead and share some of what executive producer Sam Levinson had to say about the ending of season 1. Speaking via The Hollywood Reporter, he explained what he wanted viewers to take away from those final moments:

I love what people’s interpretations are of it. Rue’s not dead, if that’s the question. I thought it was interesting when I read a piece [about that theory] and loved the piece but I think Rue has a big journey ahead of her, and a tough one. It’s not something I want to cut short because of who Rue means to me as someone who has battled with addiction and come out the other side, and because I think that there’s a lot more to delve into and unpack in terms of the effects of addiction on Rue and on her family and those around her. The possibilities are endless in many ways.

We think that coming up with theories about character deaths is common midway through a series’ run. A big part of the reason why is just because so many of us love coming up with off-the-wall theories and then ascribing them — think of this one as the Sixth Sense effect. There is something interesting about seeing the world of Euphoria through the eyes of a dead Rue, and some of the harrowing consequences and truths that come out of her life. There’s just no reality to this at the moment, as Levinson wants to continue to make the story live and breathe within its own real world. It makes the stakes moving forward matter even more if the character is still alive.

Euphoria season 2 does not have a premiere date at the moment, but you can check out some early predictions over at the link here. Meanwhile, let us know in the comments what you want to see on the new batch of episodes! (Photo: HBO.)
