American Horror Story: 1984 giving slasher-film vibes in new promo

American Horror Story: 1984

When it comes to great seasons of American Horror Story, less is more. That’s something that we’ve felt for a good while now with this show every since Murder House, and it’s something that is absolutely echoed in the latest promo that CarterMatt has for you below.

After all, American Horror Story: 1984 is going for slasher-film vibes and bringing us back to a genre that was much simpler. There isn’t any explicit evidence of heaven, hell, aliens, or anything else that is a little bit off-kilter here. This feels more like traditional horror — or, nostalgia horror, if that really is a thing. There’s nothing about what season 9 is planning that is altogether original, but instead they are bringing us something familiar that we already enjoy. You’re featuring characters at a summer camp and, to go along with that, someone is killing them. We’ve seen this sort of thing play out about a trillion times over the years within this genre.

So why are we then so excited about this season? There’s almost something comforting in this show moving more into an established mold for a season. We can spend some time wondering who the killer is and why they’re doing some of the stuff that they are. We can get to know some of the characters or embrace whatever humor is here.

Also, while this season may be similar to horror movies of the past, there is a lot that will make it feel different to other American Horror Story seasons. This is the first one without Evan Peters as a main cast member, and Sarah Paulson is expected to only play a small role. We’re going to miss having the two of them around, but this almost represents American Horror Story recognizing that this is the time that they can be different. This is an opportunity for them to try to see if there are other performers who can usher in whatever the next generation of their show is going to be. We know that the series has at least one more season after this current one, and theoretically, it could last for a very long time. It’s not like any of these seasons have to be explicitly connected to each other, even if that is something that executive producer Ryan Murphy has done here and there over the years.
