Shameless season 11: Is it still possible over at Showtime?

Shameless season 8

Is there a great chance at a Shameless season 11 happening on the other side of the upcoming season 10? At the moment, we’d say that there is a reasonably good chance of that. Think about it in this way — nobody is talking as though season 10 is going to be the final one. Most importantly, the folks over at Showtime aren’t talking like that.

Speaking recently (via Deadline) while at the TCA Summer Press Tour, the network’s entertainment head Gary Levine had the following to say about what he perceived to be the future of the franchise:

“There’s a lot of Shameless left in Shameless … We’re right in the middle of the 10th season and the stories are unbelievable, the characters are as vibrant as ever and that show has just got the most unique tone on television. John Wells and that talented cast continue to find new ways for the Gallagher family to live and amaze, so I don’t know what the future holds, but the present is exciting.”

There are some question marks surrounding the future of Shameless — namely, whether or not the entire cast will come back again. We just lost Emmy Rossum at the end of season 10 and while we’re keeping most of the rest of the cast (and bringing back Cameron Monaghan and Noel Fisher), there’s no guarantee that everyone else will stay put. Also, will viewers respond to the show without Emmy in it? She is one of the bigger stars and that is a fair question.

The good news is that as of right now, Shameless remains one of Showtime’s biggest hits. It was somewhat of a late bloomer for them in terms of ratings success (Netflix helped to push it over the top), but it’s developed this core demographic who loves the Gallagher hijinks and time and time again, finds a lot to love with what the writers bring to the table. These people are dysfunctional, but that’s so much of why the series works. It’s relatable to a lof messed-up people in the world — or, if nothing else, you watch being happy you don’t have a Frank Gallagher in your life.
