Legacies season 2: Could it be even more popular than the first?

Legacies

As we prepare for Legacies season 2 on The CW this fall, we know that it’s going to be popular … but how popular? Netflix right now could end up being a big determining factor in that.

While at the network’s official TCA Summer Press Tour event today, boss Mark Pedowitz offered up a small sense of how some of the network’s 2018-19 series are doing on Netflix — it’s a rare chance to get to hear about streaming performance there, given that Netflix never releases this data itself. Per Deadline, here’s some of what Pedowitz had to say:

Charmed did okay. Legacies did really, really well. All‑American was a phenomenal hit, comparable to Riverdale. In the Dark is following just behind that, and it’s growing by leaps and bounds.”

So what do we take away from all of this? Pedowitz renewed All American on the strength of its Netflix performance, and the performance of In the Dark may also allow it to grow even more entering season 2. The reason for the Riverdale reference here is because season 2 of the show on The CW far surpassed the first in terms of popularity, and provided more evidence that Netflix can be useful in building audiences for shows that are fairly early on in their run.

Can it be used for something similar here? That’s something that we’re going to have to learn, but what makes the situation for Legacies unique is that it generated some success for itself without even considering Netflix. It had solid live ratings (better than many other new series on the network), and also fared well in terms of DVR numbers. It more than justified its existence after two other CW series in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, and we think that there is a chance it becomes one of the bigger surprises of the fall for them.

Of course, with all of these CW series there is still one thing to remember: Just because someone watches on Netflix doesn’t necessarily mean they will transition over to The CW itself. It worked for Riverdale, but that was years ago and this landscape is rapidly changing.
