Euphoria finale: Why it matters for the series’ long-term game
Tomorrow’s finale is going to be what leaves a lasting impression for the next several months — it’s the last thing that viewers will have in their mind. With another HBO show in Game of Thrones, it benefited for many years (before the series finale, anyway) giving you fantastic finales. You want to make viewers feel like the journey is worth it and with Euphoria, such is the case with Rue, Jules, and some of the other important characters at the heart of this story.
Is all of the pain worth it? That’s one of the questions that you have to wonder entering this episode, and this is where we could be left off still when it wraps up. This episode is going to be one that defines what sort of show this is. Are we meant to take away any sense of peace from Euphoria, is it more of a harrowing cautionary tale for young people, or is it somewhere in between? We’re not sure, seven episodes in, that there is any real moral message that we’re meant to take from any of this. What we have more than anything else is a story of a particular reality.
If Euphoria nails the finale tomorrow — and gives you the series-changing moment that could define it for the next twelve months — we could easily see this becoming HBO’s biggest shows. It feels still like there’s another level for it to reach in terms of its audience, and it is one that will spread throughout the next several months. It benefits in some ways by it being only eight episodes, since viewers can get it all done in just a matter of days.
We’re fascinated by where the story of Euphoria could go from here … but it needs to stick the landing first.
