Agents of SHIELD season 6 finale spoilers: Clark Gregg on epic ending

How is the Agents of SHIELD season 6 finale going to end over on ABC? Based on early indications from Clark Gregg, it will be closing the door in a way that leaves many collective jaws hanging on the floor. It’s the biggest finale to date and for many different reasons — not only will it be tying up the events of season 6, but it could also be setting the stage for season 7.

Speaking in a new interview with Newsarama, Gregg made it very clear that season 6 is going to conclude in a way that makes it so that almost nothing on the show moving forward is going to be the same as it’s been:

“It really rips the entire rug of the first six seasons out from under people. Season 7 is a big departure. So with the ending, a lot will be reflective of that and the changes that happen before that … It’s very interesting to be saying goodbye, putting on these costumes for the last time, especially for me because I’ve been doing it for 11 years now, playing this guy, dead and then back, dead and then back – and God knows.”

So if everything changes after the finale, where does the show go from there? We’ve seen with this past year already, the Agents of SHIELD writing staff has done their part in order to ensure that they tell the story that is best for their characters. Sure, it’s been occasionally annoying seeing the show begin to move away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but, when the dust settles, it may be the best thing if they feel like they’ve got a little bit more freedom. Plus, it allows them to not have to worry as much about what is going on elsewhere.

One thing we know for certain based on what Gregg said is this — we’re going to miss Gregg and the rest of this cast. Like Arrow on The CW, they are a pioneering force of superheroes on TV.
