Power spin-off starring Mary J. Blige ordered at Starz

Just in case you weren’t excited enough for Power season 6 to air on Starz, we come bearing some additional news: There’s also a spin-off on the way!

Today at the TCA Summer Press Tour, the network gave a green light to Power Book II: Ghost, the first of what could be many spin-off series set within the world. If that wasn’t exciting enough for you, also know that the legendary Mary J. Blige is going to be appearing in a lead role.

In a statement, here is what executive producers Courtney A. Kemp and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson had to say on the subject:

“We have alluded previously to various spin-offs, prequels and other expansions of the ‘Power’ Universe … Today we are pleased to announce that we are in pre-production on the first of what we know will be a collection of series inspired by the dynamic world of ‘Power.’ ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ will continue the journey of some of ‘Power’s’ most controversial characters. Joining the cast of the new series and the ‘Power’ family, please welcome world-renowned recording artist and Oscar nominee Mary J. Blige.”

Is this going to be a sequel to the original show? The title almost suggests that it’d be a follow-up, but then we come with the question of why it’s called “Book II” and how it could “continue the journey” of the show. Given that Power itself is the story of Ghost, how do you keep telling that story without Ghost being there himself? That is one of the obvious questions that this new series is going to be forced to answer one way or another; we’ll see what happens in that department.

Given that the final season of Power is airing on Starz starting on August 25, we gotta get through that before we can even get to the spin-off! If we had to guess, our feeling is that we’ll be seeing it on the air in either late 2020 or at some point in 2021.
