Supergirl season 5 spoilers: Show EP on big technology battle
If you want a few more details all about it, check out what executive producer Robert Rovner had to say on the subject (via ComicBook.com) this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con:
“This season will be about how technology impacts us, and how people use it to escape from what happens in their lives … We’re seeing how our villains use technology against us, and our heroes try to bring us back.
“What we’re looking at is how technology is impacting the way people engage and giving them an escape not to engage … It seems like nowadays, everyone is kind of on their phones or not really present, and so we wanted to speak to that and kind of how it might be hard to live in the ugliness of what’s going on, and how a character like Kara can try and help us overcome that. It speaks to a lot of the stuff the characters will be going through.”
The obvious Black Mirror comparisons are meant to be there, and we don’t think that Supergirl is out to spread some sort of technology-is-terrible message by any means. There may be an innate understanding throughout the season that there are some forms of tech that are rather useful. The problem becomes when it starts to overwhelm you and you lose your sense of who you really are.
We absolutely think that there are a lot of people out there within the Supergirl audience who need to hear this message. As for whether or not they will, that’s a slightly different story.
